Happy Holidays 2013

Another great year is coming to an end. Time to spend time with the 5 Fs: friends family and fantastically fatty foods! I hope to get some personal art time in between 12 hr gaming sessions. :)

Here is a quick Santa sketch I did while I was home sick last week. I hope everyone has an awesome holiday week. See ya next year!   -PEET

Beyond Good and Evil 10 year anniversary

Today is the 10 year anniversary of one of my all time favorite games: Beyond Good and Evil. This was such a brilliant game. Everything from the character design, to the world navigation, puzzles, platforming, stealth and story were all incredible. The most amazing innovation was the fact the game stars a female protagonist that is not a sex symbol. She shows no cleavage or legs. She is a mother to orphans and a reporter on a fantastic quest to expose the truth to the population.

I started this fan pic many years ago. I dug it up tonight and finished it:

If you haven't played it, check it out. Its on Steam for $10. It may look dated, but the game is still great. The best games never die.  :)

Fish Tank General

I was asked to 'post something new' today. This is the first thing I found on my desk. :P
We do random themes in sketch group every week so I have a ton of these lying around.

Time to get crankin

WOW! Its almost been a month and I havent been able to find time to work on this guy. My goal is to have this done by the end of the month... those damn Steam summer sales... No more playing games! (or sleeping)

Here is a quick update. Having fun blocking out some weird, creepy face shapes.

My mega talented buddy, Paul Richards is setting up a sweet art book so I started a submission. I will post some work in progress images as I find time to work on it over the next month.

STEP 1:  Simple thumbnail sketch. I do a few really rough sketches focusing on proportions and pose. I try to do a sketch in under a minute then move on to the next one. When I spend more time on them, I start losing the initial dynamic forms.

STEP 2:  Then I scale it up, lower the opacity and do quick refining line drawing pass. I normally try not to spend more than 15 min. on this stage. Keep it quick and dirty.

STEP 3: The I hide the under sketch (but never delete it) and do a quick value blockin to push the basic forms. I did this one in about 5 min.

I try to get through step 2 and 3 very quickly so I don't get tied down to anything. Now that I have the basics in, I can decide more specifics like: 'Where does this break? Where do I need to adjust proportions? Where is the light source? Who drank all my soda?' etc.

The Last of Us

The last of us is an incredible step in the right direction for immersion and narrative in games. If you need any convincing to pick this game up, just check out their Meta Critic page:

I made some fan stickers for the Naughty Dog crew who happen to work right across the street from us Rioters. GG guys!  Whats next? PS4 Jak and Daxter plz!  :)

I was messing with a stylized face study and I decided to try to turn it into a LOL champ. Sona was my first chioce, but that just turned out to be far too creepy. So I shifted to a more animated fellow, Draven. Once I got him in there, I decided to bend his hair and neck into a macaroni noodle shape... why not.

The Freljord event finally happened this week! We released the reworks of Trundle and Sejuani, a bunch of awesome skins and our latest map: !Howling Abyss!

This map was massively challenging. This was our first attempt at an animated and destructible environment, first time trying weather FX, a lot of depth testing, ambient creatures, etc. We threw everything at this and broke it many times. hehe. Ultra props for everyone who worked hard to make this the best Riot event to date!

This is just too much fun to be considered work.  :)

Space Mustache Koala likes Dungeon Hearts

I picked up Dungeon Hearts on Steam for $3 a couple of days ago. Its a fun little combat puzzle game with some great simple mechanics and visuals. It started out being really simple fun and ended up being insanely stressful! I was clicking so fast desperately trying to keep my team alive as I got closer and closer to the inevitable wipe. I was on a great run with only my archer still alive. I had an amazing combo jem set up for the kill on the boss. 1 split second miss click and its all over. I jump up and scream in agony "NOOOOOO!!!!" My daughter comes in with a concerned look on her face "Whats gong on?" I sigh deeply and give her a hug. "Shhhh... Its all over now."

It is with a heavy heart and a sore finger that I approve the purchase of Dungeon Hearts.

Twisted Treeline Trees

I got a request to post something I worked on at Riot. I will have more to show soon, but for now here are a couple of tree concepts for Twisted Treeline. We wanted to retain the dark, whimsical vibe of the trees while making them more dynamic and aggressive.
